Buttermilk Bread

Buttermilk Bread with poppy seeds

This is my favorite bread recipe. It comes out as an excellent sandwich bread.

Buttermilk Bread

5-51/2 C. bread flour (I just use my hard spring wheat)
3 T. Sugar (or honey, sucanat)
2 t. salt
1/4 t. baking soda
1 pkg or 1 T. active dry yeast (or 1 t. instant yeast)
1 C. water, almost hot to touch,

about like a baby's bath water or slightly warmer
1 C. buttermilk (or kefir)
1/3 C. butter (or coconut oil, etc)
Topping after rising in pans:
1 egg, beaten
sesameor poppy seeds for sprinkling

Stir first 2 C. flour and dry ingredients together, put the rest in a pan on the stove to warm until the butter begins to melt, or to 120-125 degrees. Add liquid to dry and beat on high for 2 min, add 2 C. flour and beat 2 min more. Add rest of flour 1/2 C. at a time until dough cleans the side of bowl. Knead under dough hook for 8 min. Rise in greased bowl, punch down, rest 5 min and divide in 2 and shape. Place in greased bread pans, Rise and just before baking, brush with beaten egg and sprinkle seeds on top. Bake at 375 degrees for 40 min. Bread will be brown and hollow sounding when tapped on bottom when done.

How I Shop For Groceries/Supplies

I am often asked how I shop for my groceries and household items. I have decided to do a few posts to share with you how I get my stuff. I hope that some of you reading will share things that work for you as well!
In this first post, I would like to share about how I get a lot of my vitamins/herbs and some household items online.

One of my favorite sites to shop is Vitacost.com. I can usually find what I need for a better price than I can pick it up off the shelf at a store. But not always. It always bears checking out.

A simple way for me to save a bit extra when I shop at Vitacost, is to go through the ShopAtHome.com website to also get 6% back on my purchase. It is a very simple and easy way for me to save money on stuff I am already planning to buy.

Here are a few of the items I get from Vitacost.com:

Shampoo Base (I'll write more about my shampoo later! I really stretch this out...)

For my dried herbs/spices, I have two sites I use the most. The Bulk Herb Store and Mountain Rose Herbs. Between these two sites, I can always get what I need in the way of essential oils, spices, herbs, seasonings, oils for lip balm, lotion, etc, and even the containers needed to store the things I have created. So far, neither of these sites are listed on any of my cashback sites. But that's okay, I still like them and I save money by getting my herbs in a larger quantity than what is on the grocery store shelf. And they are sooo much fresher! I also like to shop with a friend on these when I can. It helps both my friend and I out when we can split shipping and even products.

I usually shop at The Bulk Herb Store for most of my bulk dried herbs. I love their herbal mixes, which includes their Cough Tea, Double-E Immune Boost Tea, Mama's Milk Tea, and, one of our favorite, Doctor Cinnamon. I also get Bentonite Clay from them and have recently been using one of the HerbaSmoothie mixes. I also love the fact that you can learn so much about herbs right on The Bulk Herb Store site. Each page is loaded with a ton of info about each product. Many times there are excerpts from several herb books telling about what the herb is used for right on the herb page. They also list whether or not an herb should be used while pregnant or nursing, which is very helpful. There are also simple directions listed on the site telling how to make herbal preparations, such as a tincture, salve, etc. And last but not least, there are numerous how-to videos. These are fun and informative. Bottom line: Go check The Bulk Herb Store out. Even if you are new to herbs, this is a great place to learn.

Mountain Rose Herbs is also an awesome site for learning and shopping. I have not used one thing from them that disappointed me. They usually have good prices and a great selection of high quality herbs, spices, essential oils, carrier oils, clays, teas, bath and body products, etc, etc. It is a really fun site to shop!

One thing I really like about Mountain Rose is the bulk quantity discounts. From their site:

Mountain Rose Herbs also has a large selection of supplies to help with all kinds of herbal projects. Tins, jars, dropper bottles, lip balm tubes, etc.

Help With Homemade Products

A friend asked me to share some of what I use instead of buying expensive cleaning products/personal care products. I am still learning in this area, but here are a few things I do to save money. This is actually a quote from an email to another friend asking for help...

Here is the laundry soap I am currently using. It is working well.

"Organic Body Care" is a good book I would recommend for recipes for personal body care recipes. It is a great resource. I use her recipe for herbal shampoo. This can also be used as a face wash for oily/combination skin/body wash.

Here is the basic version I use:

Bring to boil:
2 C. water
Add to boiling water, remove from heat, cover and steep 30 min:
1 T. each of dried herb: Yarrow, Lemongrass, Lemon Balm, Peppermint (I get these from Mountain Rose Herbs and the Bulk Herb Store.)
Strain herb mixture, add:
1/2 C. shampoo base or all natural shampoo. (A natural baby shampoo will work as well. I use this one. http://www.vitacost.com/Jason-Daily-Shampoo-Fragrance-Free)
Add essential oils to empty shampoo bottle:
5 drops lemon essential oil
10 drops basil essential oil (Unless user is pregnant.)
10 Rosemary essential oil (unless user is pregnant. Rosemary is not to be used by pregnant women!)
5 Lavender essential oil

Add shampoo mix to shampoo bottle and gently mix. Let sit for 24 hrs to fully blend, but I have used it right away many times. =) The book suggests storing it in the fridge or only having a small bottle in the shower and the rest in the fridge...

Toothpaste:
Yes, it works and we really like this. David asks for it if I run out. We like cinnamon oil in it. Oh, I use the baby toothpaste recipe. This is very easy. Note: Don't use a metal spoon or container for the clay. I use a plastic measuring spoon to measure the clay and to stir the mixture and I use a small canning jar for the finished product.

I don't have time to write this post, but here I am anyway.

I just found out that there has been a movie made about my Dr. The Dr. I went to when I walked out of MD Anderson 5 years ago because all they would offer me was chemo. As most of my readers may know, I have had 2 children since my cancer treatments 5 years ago. My Dr. at MDA told me that I beat the odds. They didn't really expect me to recover from lymphoma. I am so thankful that I did.

So, I have a new little toy, er, tool in my kitchen, that I keep thinking deserves a word in blogland. This little thing is just great! Ladies, and gentlemen, (if any are reading), I give you the Faberware Stovetop Percolator.

Now those of you who know me well know that I am not a coffee drinker. I could be, but I choose not to be. With pregnancy and nursing being a big part of my life right now, I decided that I don't want to torture myself. (I can drink it, I can't drink it, I can, I can't, I...) So why am I messing around with a percolator? Glad you asked. =)

I am learning to make herbal teas and healthy coffee alternatives. I recently learned that some teas, such as this one, are better made in a percolator rather than just letting them steep on the counter. Thus began my hunt for the best percolator, that didn't cost me a ton of money.

This little pot, was the best I found to meet my needs. It is an 8-Cup percolator that sits on the stove, has all stainless parts inside and has a sturdy, stainless steel body. It perks beautifully, and is only $21.99 on Amazon.com, which is where I got mine. That is a very nice price, at least in my book, and if you compare the other percolator prices, this one is an easy win. These are also part of the Amazon 4 for 3 promotion.

I am also pleased that this one sits on my stove instead of plugging in. I have more control this way and since I have a gas stove, it is more economical for me to perk on the stove than the counter anyway.

Now, just a word to the coffee drinkers. According to the reviews I read while researching, the percolator is a superior was to make coffee, as apposed to a drip coffee maker. Reviewer after review raved about the coffee made in this thing vs whatever thing they had been using.

Oh, and on the subject of stuff floating in the cup, rest at ease. I have never had floaties in my cup with this. Just fill the cup that holds the grounds/tea while it is on the counter, not over the pot.

Just had to share this with you! Oh, and these would make great Mother's Day gifts!

Welcome, Rayna Yael!

On Jan 12, 2011, I finally went into real labor and got to enjoy every minute of it. All 12 hrs. =D It was not easy, but I truly did enjoy it. That may sound strange but after my labor with Travis was cut off by a C-section, I relished every part of my labor with Rayna. God was with us and gave me the strength I needed. I labored all night and amazingly none of the kids ever woke up until they heard the baby cry.

Rayna with Mommy and Daddy, just minutes after she was born. This is also her first time to be prayed for on this side of the womb.

Rayna Yael was born Jan 13, 2011 at 5:08am. She was my first HBAC. (Home Birth After Cesarean) She weighed 8lbs 3oz and was 20 1/4" long. Her daddy's hands were the first to hold her as he caught her as she entered this world. As you can see, she is beautiful and worth the wait. =) God's timing was perfect, as usual, and we are very thankful and blessed to have our little Rayna Yael.

Labor, Or Rather, Lack Of True Labor, Struggles

I had my worst time yet in this pregnancy last night.

Things seemed to be getting ready for the baby and then seemed to really start cranking up, so I called my midwife and she headed out. David and the kids got things prepped and ready, and we all were excited. Midwife checked me and I was 1cm. She further ascertained that this was just a better version of false labor than I had previously experienced.

Needless to say, this is not what I was expecting or wanted to hear. Honestly, I am still having a hard time this morning. I am doing better, but my emotions are really giving me a ride when they take the notion. After nearly 2 weeks of this kind of thing, I really thought that I was dilated further than basically a 0.

There is not really a way to go through explaining all the reasons why this is hard for me. But God is faithful and has given me help in my time of need, just as He always has.

One thing that I am really being encouraged with this morning is that God is the One Who will bring me to the time of labor. I know, duh.

Is 66:9 "Shall I bring to the point of birth and not cause to bring forth?” says the LORD; “shall I, who cause to bring forth, shut the womb?” says your God."

But as He reminded me of this this morning, I just gave a sigh of relief as I realized that all this really is God's deal and He is the One Whose job it is to bring this baby into this world. I am just a vessel that He has chosen to carry this little person. My part is to stay submitted to Him and rest in His timing. Can I do that on my own? Uh, no. But with His grace and power given to me, I can.

A further calming balm to my out of control emotions this morning is, God is God, not me. Another, duh, I know, but it really does help when things are not going my way to stop and remind myself that I am not the one who sees all. He is. Do I really want His job, do I really want to sit down, throw a fit and demand that the Author of the universe sit up, pay attention and cater to my feeble demands? Really, I don't have access to enough information to make those kinds of demands. I can't answer the questions God asked Job any better than He could, and so, like Job, I surrender and plead no contest.

Really, in the scope of things, my issue is pretty piddly compared to lots of things that other people go through, or even things I have been through in the past. But, an issue is an issue, so no matter how piddly, if the heart can become settled and still knowing that God is God, then it lays a foundation for other battles. I am praying that God burns this into me in such a way that it is my first response to a trial, no matter how big or how small.

Thoughts From My Pregnancy

This post was written Jan 6, 2011, but I scheduled it to post at a later date, after the baby was born. Rayna Yael was born Jan 13, 2011.

The question on the minds of all around me right now, and understandably so, is, have you had the baby yet? Or, haven't you had that baby yet? It has been on my mind a bit as well. =D Esp since earlier this week it looked like I might go into labor, and then it all went away. And then it looked like I might again, and all went away. And so on. I have been in and out of labor mode a few times this week. A bit like lining up to the starting line, ready for the race, and just before the gun goes off, the whole thing is called off. Leaves you feeling a bit like, "Now what?" And then we line up again... And again....

I have never really dealt with this in my earlier pregnancies and hadn't "prepped" myself for this. But I have been learning a few things that I want to record here. If anything I am going through/learning in this time is helpful to anyone reading, then that is great, too. =)

As I was telling a friend, I am having to just rest in God's timing right now. Or rather, fighting to rest. Sounds like a contradiction, but it has been a constant striving to wrestle my emotions down on the mat and hold them there 'til they submit to the facts: I am resting in the Lord's timing and plan. End of story. This battle has sometimes had to take place several times a day, and I have lost count of how many times I have won and then had to rejoin the fight to rest and trust in the last week. =)

As happens often with this type of battle, I have not been without the encouragement of the Lord. If I had gone into labor on two of the occasions that I thought I was going to, it would not have been good timing. There are two babies that are happy with their mommies right now, and if I had gone into labor my midwife would have either missed my birth or theirs. God knew. =) And His encouragement to me to rest in Him and His timetable was right on.

This is not an easy time for me right now, but I am thankful for it. I am looking forward to taking from the trenches of this battle the lessons that God is teaching me and using them to make other battles easier, or at least helping me to see them differently.

Hot Chocolate Mix

I have been craving hot chocolate. I don't know if this is due to baby, the weather or just weirdness. =D What ever the case is, I am.
So, I made some. Hot chocolate, that is. And it was so good I thought I would share it on my blog for whoever else is having a thing for the hot drink that warms you down to the toes.
Here is the recipe I used:

Hot Chocolate Mix

3 1/2 Cups nonfat dry milk
1 Cup powdered sugar (Hint: I put some of my natural sucanat sugar in my Vitamix dry container and turned it into powdered sugar. This gives rich taste as well as being a bit healthier than the white stuff...)
1/2 Cup cocoa powder. ( I like the dark chocolate...)

Combine all ingredients and store in air tight container.
To make a mug of yummy brown stuff, add 1/4-1/3 Cup of the mix to a mug, and fill with hot water. Stir and enjoy!

True Woman '10

Okay, maybe I am a bit late in posting about my time at the conference, but I wanted to post about it anyway. And to share some exciting news for all those who didn't make it, or even for those who did.

I had an amazing time. I was encouraged, convicted of my own sin and challenged to seek the Lord in a deeper way in my everyday life. I was blessed to sit at the feet of many godly, radical women who are totally sold out to Christ and who are not afraid to speak the truth of God's word. I was very encouraged to see the nearly 4,000 women who attended the conference. I felt a bit like Elijah, seeing all the ones that the Lord had reserved for Himself who had not bowed the knee to Baal. In the weeks that have followed the conference, I have had the words of all who spoke following me around and echoing in my ears.

I thought I would do something a bit different in this post. Recently, a reader of my blog sent me an email with some questions and I thought it would be fun to share a few here.

Where were you born?
I was born in Vancouver, WA. My parents moved 20 times before I was 10, (no, not military...), which included moving to OK, ID, a few places in OR and WA, AK, and back to OR/WA. We lived in the same house in Portland, OR for 7 1/2 years and then packed up and moved to OK again when I was almost 15. When I was 21, I met my husband and after we married, I moved to TX and have been here for 9 1/2 years now, the longest I have ever lived in one place. =D

-Have you always lived out in the country?
I have not always lived in the country, in fact, I did most of my growing up in town. When we lived in Portland, we had an 80x100ft lot. When we moved to OK for the second time, we rented houses that were usually still in town, but out a bit. We had chickens, sheep, turkeys, etc there. But even when I was in town, I was a country girl stuck in the city. =) Now we live 15 miles from the nearest grocery store. That was definitely an adjustment, but I have learned how to manage it very well now. I do a lot of my shopping online, which saves me a ton of time and gas and usually money as well.

We tend to be homebodies as well, and I personally think that while a family is young, this is really good. We do like to go hiking and camping, swimming, picnicking, enjoy flea markets, shopping in junk stores, etc. We haven't been to the zoo in a while, but enjoy that as well. We have done museums, etc when we are traveling. I think anywhere with water is a big hit with our folks. =) We like going to parks and swinging, etc, esp when we have spent a good portion of the day shopping! =P At home, my kids are outside a lot in warm weather, we enjoy gardening, working with our animals, etc. The front yard is an ever changing place for play, where shovels are the tool of choice along with sticks and hammers! =D In the house, cooking, cleaning, coloring, play-dough, imaginative play, (dolls, animals, blocks, etc), puzzles, tent building, scissors and tape can turn anything into you name it! Mixes

I am finally having a little room to breathe in the kitchen project. Up to this point, so much of my input/research etc. has been needed, almost constantly. But the past week or so, I have not had to be "on site" quite as much. This has allowed me the luxury of giving our meals more attention.
So, I gave them some attention. It has been slim pickin's at times around here with mom busy with other stuff.

Several years ago, I borrowed a book from a friend titled, "Make-A-Mix Cookery" by Karine Eliason, Nevada Harward and Madeline Westover I now own my own copy and have wanted to get to a place that I could really start using it. I found that place last week.

I made the Quick Mix, Roll Mix and Muffin Mix listed in the book. In no time flat, I had cranked out biscuits, rolls, muffins, cookies, and even a cake from these 3 mixes. (Although, not all at the same time.) I love the ability to make things fast for my family without any additives, preservatives, etc.

Here is the recipe for the Quick Mix:

8 1/2 C. flour (I used white whole wheat flour)
1 T. baking powder
1T. salt
2t cream of tartar
1 t. baking soda
1 1/2 non-fat dry milk

2 1/4 shortening (I used Palm Shortening)

Mix all the dry ingredients, then cut in the shortening until it resembles cornmeal in texture.

Here is one recipe to use the quick mix for:

Never-Fail Rolled Biscuts

3 C. Quick Mix
2/3 milk or water

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Combine ingredients and let sit for 5 min. Knead about 15 times and roll out on floured board to 1/2" thickness. Cut with biscuit cutter. Bake 10 to 12 min until golden brown. Makes 12 large biscuits.

These were very good and fast to do. I doubled the recipe for Quick Mix to give me more time between having to mix up the mix. My whole family has been enjoying these mixes, or at least they are enjoying the products made from them. =) Maybe your family will enjoy them as well.

Who's Business Is It, Anyway?

I am taking a bit of time-out on my kitchen project posts to have a bit of a rant.

I was talking to a friend the other day about things going on in her life and in the life of some of her family. She was sharing how they were dealing with a tough situation but getting through it. She made the comment that many people had made rude comments about the decisions they were making. "Oh, I just can't believe you are considering that!"

I think so many people don't realize how rude they are when they hand out life advice. Now, just to be clear here, I think there is a time for speaking the truth to a friend when they are in an immoral situation, or headed for real trouble. Gently, and clearly. (Not that I have always been the best at that....=P) A true friend speaks the truth and sticks by their friend no matter what, even in the dirty stuff.

The situation my friend was dealing with was sensitive. But there were no immoral actions to be reprimanded for. The descions being made were just not the descions that everyone else thought they should make. And yet, people act like it is a moral issue.

Like I said above, I think a lot of people just don't realize how rude and hurtful those type of advice/comments are. Everything from pushy advice on how many kids you shouldn't have, or, when are you going to have some kids, to what color you should or shouldn't paint your kitchen, or what type of hairstyle you should have, etc, etc, etc. People just seem to say what they think and think they can figure out in an instant all kinds of important life decisions for you. Amazing talent.

I think, rather, I am sure that I have been guilty of this same transgression. I have lots of opinions on how people could edit and rearrange their lives. Plenty of times I think I am right about it, too. =D But really, whose business is it? Do I answer to God for them? NO. This is something I am personally working on, to not be too apt to hand out free life-consultant advice.

Being asked is different. If asked, if you are really asking, then some freely given advice/info/opinion is appropriate. I have some friends who I am close enough with that know they can speak into my life. And they don't have to ask me every time they do. I appreciate those friends, immensely. If I am asked, I will share what I see/my opinion with a friend.

Kitchen Remodel

I have been bouncing around and excited for about a month now, but haven’t taken time to write about it. I think most of my facebook friends know, but for the blog friends who don’t know…..we are finally remodeling our kitchen! Or maybe I should say, re-creating our kitchen.

This has been a long time coming, and while it has not been an easy wait, I am really thankful for how God has worked in the wait. If we had built the kitchen we had wanted to build 4 ½ years ago, it just wouldn’t have been the best plan, or even close. We have changed, grown in our understanding of the hows and whys of kitchen design, (although we are by no means experts…) and though the kitchen we would have built would have been okay, it would have had so many shortcomings compared to the one we are building now.

So, here we are at last. Creating our dream kitchen.

In the interim, we have read books, made endless sketches, thought we had the design down, but when we set up mock counters to test it for a few days, found flaws that didn't show up on paper. I have rearranged my kitchen umpteen times for different reasons, and each time learned something new.

In our priorities for the kitchen, there are a few things that have been at the forefront of our list from the beginning. I’d like to share a few here.

Function. Our first priority has been it has to work, and we shouldn’t have to work extra hard to make it work. If the kitchen doesn’t function well in everyday life, expanding to meet the needs of a large group as well as handle the needs of everyday family life, it becomes more of an obstacle to the flow of things than an asset. We all have chores, but if daily stuff is a chore when it shouldn’t be, something isn’t functioning right. Stuff that doesn’t function well costs you, either time, money or both. Same in the kitchen.

Simplicity. Sometimes the simple things work the best. Take a tour of kitchens, modern as well as those in older homes, and you can find tons of anti-simple examples. Like, when you have to clear the counter before you can open the doors of the appliance garage, or the cupboard door. Or have to unload the pan cupboard every time you need a pan at the back of the cupboard. I’m sure many could tell their tale of simple tasks that took too much time to get done due to a design flaw.

Doable. I have had some BIG ideas during this kitchen thing. Everything from skylights, bay windows, two dishwashers and huge sinks to extension tables, detachable islands, (and could we figure out a way to still have electricity and plumbing on the part we move?), waterfalls and herb gardens right in the kitchen. Some of my big ideas are in my new kitchen design. Many aren’t. Function and Simplicity ruled out many of them, but budget, and plain limitations of the site we are building in ruled out the rest. (Can’t do a skylight through the attic we have, just won’t work structurally…)

Efficient. Efficiency is where Funtion and Simplity meet and join together with your efforts to cause your work to go well. I may be in danger of becoming a nut in the area of efficiency. It is becoming a passion in everything I do. I haven’t arrived at the level of efficiency that I strive for, but I am excited about learning things that help me to be more efficient in everyday doings. Our kitchen design has been constantly examined using the test of efficiency. This includes the use of space and planning for the least amount of wasted space as well as planning for the easiest access to the tools used in everyday tasks.

These are some of the top factors we have tried to take into consideration as we have planned our kitchen. I could write more about each factor, and maybe I will at some point. For now, we will see how it all comes out. The cabinets are being installed as I type. =)

What Kind Of Fruit?

"Honey, wake up. Can you help me pick peaches this morning while it is cool?"

A short time later I was in the orchard, enjoying the peaceful surroundings. As I picked, I had a few thoughts that I decided to share here.

I kept thinking as I was picking, what kind of fruit do people find hanging on me when they get close? Does it look good on one side but has a rotten spot starting on the other? Is is old and swiveled up from hanging too long? Are there scars and bug-bites? Is it holding firm, or about to drop off and fall to the ground? Is it too small?

People come to my tree all day long. Hungry people, tired people, fussy people. People who need something from me. As I was picking, I pondered, what kind of fruit do I hand out? If they catch me at a busy moment, do I hand them something that they have to pick out the good and leave the bad? Or do they consistently find good fruit, just right to meet their needs. Do I bear fruit that they delight to partake of or fruit that leaves much to be desired?

Of course, the only way to bear good fruit is to stay attached to the Vine, the only One who can produce anything good in me.

John 15:4-5 Abide zin me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; ayou are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bbears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

I have another busy day ahead, and feel inadequate to meet all the needs. My tree feels a little bare right now. =) But thankfully, as I am faithful to abide in Him, He will be faithful to supply all I need to bear much fruit.

Wiping Up After Jesus

"I don't have any pants, Mommy. I need you to find me some pants."

All day at my house I am fielding demands for my attention. Trying to anticipate needs ahead of time, and being covered with still more.

And then there are all those accidents. Spilled milk, food dropped at meal time, potty accidents, water on the counter after washing hands, sticky messes, etc.

I don't have time for it. I have things I am doing, esp right now. It is peach season at my house. This is the time of year that I am meeting myself coming, always waaaay more to do than I can do and people demanding my attention constantly. Uh, you need water. Okay, hold on, I'll get it.

It can be easy to get snappy and short with so many demands on my time. But I was pondering this early this morning. Why do these things seem like such a bother? Would it seem like such an imposition is someone important was here and they were the ones needing something? What if they spilled their milk? Would I huff about it? If they needed laundry done so they would have clothes to wear, would I see it as a bother, or an honor?

Jesus said that if you have done it unto the least of these, you have done it to Him. I have some of the "least of these" walking around in my house everyday. Some of them are not even 3ft tall yet. Some can't talk well. Yet, through them, Jesus is walking around in my house everyday. The question is, do I see Him? Or do I just see another bottom that needs wiped, a mess that needs cleaned up and laundry that needs washed?

I am praying that today I will see Jesus around me. In the little mess-makers running all over my house. That I will see beyond the messes and needs, the demands on my time. I want to joyfully serve my family, seeing their needs and meeting them, just as if I was serving my Jesus.

I don't know how long this will be availible, but this is something you won't want to miss.

At our house, we just love audio drama. Paws and Tales, The Pond, Adventures in Odyssey, Down Gilead Lane, Jonathan Park are a few of the shows we like to listen to. (Many of these can be heard on HisKidsRadio.net.) We also love to listen to audio books, old radio drama, etc. This past year, we have been really enjoying Lamplighter Theatre.

Lamplighter Theatre has some amazing audio dramas, all based on old books, which they have reprinted and have available as well. These are not only entertaining stories, but very deep, challenging and character building. Go here to look at their player and check some out for yourself.

Right now, Lamplighter is offering the complete audio drama, "A Peep Behind the Scenes" for free. You can listen to the whole program or download it here. This is something for all ages, old and young, although, I will say the for the very young, it may be good for mom or dad to listen first and decide if their little one is ready.

Thoughts....

I am having some big thoughts this afternoon, and thought I would jot them down here so I can read them later.

I have been fretting and worrying over things lately. Trying to get ahead, trying too hard to figure things out. Stressed when I can't see around the corner.

Why? Cause I am a silly human who can't see God's plans and I think it is all up to me. Sometimes I don't see that that is what I am doing, but it is nonetheless.

Today I am thinking about this. Praying about it. And I think I am getting somewhere with it.

God knows where I am. He knows everything I need. When I have a need, in any area of my life, including lack of faith, I need to talk to Him. Not beg like a four-year old who will fuss if they don't get what they want. Not fixated on the need that needs taken care of, but looking to Him to fully take care of ALL my needs.

And then, do my business. No fretting, dropping everything else til I figure out how I am going get my needs taken care of. God knows where I am at. He WILL take care of me. I just need to rest and trust in Him. That is not easy to do in the midst of my Need, whatever it is. But today as I am pondering this, I am seeing again that I must rest in the storm. I must continue on in my work that He has called me to while I wait for Him to take care of my needs.

My prayer is that I will really get this down deep inside of me. I want this to be such a part of the way I do things that my first thought is to trust God, not worry and fret.

Retracing Old Paths...

Have you ever had the experience of hearing a message, reading a book, etc, and having one of those life changing moments that you point back to that spot over the years and say, "That shaped me. I am here at this spot today because of that message, that book...."

Last night David and I re-listened to one of those messages. As I listened, my heart rejoiced. One of the hardest times of my life had been ahead of me as I had listened before, though I didn't know it. The Lord, in His mercy, provided me with what I needed to get through that time well ahead of time. I also heard things in that message that I don't remember hearing before. I have changed so much since then. I understood much more of what he was talking about this time around.

Jakin's Birthday Cake...

Yes, I am showing off. I made Jakin a cake for his birthday. When asked what he wanted, he was thoughtful for a minute, then said, "Dinosaurs, dinosaur tracks, and...snakes."

I wasn't sure how to proceed, but after a trip to the bedroom and mixing some ground cinnamon with the frosting and piping it on....I was pleased.

The effect was even better when we relit the candles at night for round 2 of the birthday cake... (and yes, we sang "Happy Birthday" again....

After reading this post over at Erin's Blog, I was elated to find that someone has made a free Firefox pluggin to help me mind myself.

I have often wished that there was a way to keep track of time while on the computer, a way to set some limits on where and how I spend my time online. An online timer, so to speak.

Thankfully, there is a help for fellow time-wasters who want to make a simple change. LeechBlock is a simple add-on for Firefox that is awesome for kids or adults to help manage time. I love this add-on. You simply tell Leech where you want to limit your time during the day. It can be as simple as limiting Facebook to 5 hrs a day instead of 10, or only allowing yourself, (or kids) to visit certain sites at certain times of the day.

So, a great tool to keep you accountable to yourself, or your kids accountable, install LeechBlock.

DIY Toothpaste?

Ever wonder if there are better ways to brush your teeth? Or something cheaper, simpler to put on the brush?

Okay, maybe most people don't think about such boring things, but I have wondered about it. I mean, what it in toothpaste, anyway? And is the only option for DIY toothpaste to stick nasty baking soda on your brush and pucker while you brush?

So, last night, I tried it. I looked up some recipes online and then charged off to mix a batch for the nightly ritual. I was surprised at how easy it was, how much it made and the effectiveness of the end result.

If you are interested, here is the recipe I tried.

Even my kids liked it. I used some peppermint extract, about half as much as called for in the recipe. My kids don't really like "hot" toothpaste.... =) I personally would like a bit more "mint" to my paste, so I may make another batch for David and I.

Mixing your own toothpaste may not be something you think about as you move the brush back and forth in your mouth. Then again, maybe now you will be thinking about how you could change up the stuff in your tube.......

I got a birthday present!

I really like it and just have to share it with the blog world....

First, a small rant.

I have been amazed at the effectiveness of marketing. Tell women that cleaning their floors is too hard unless they use______ product, and they hop out and buy the gadget mop. Never mind that the refill for the thing will cost them a fortune.

Here is an example.

The Swiffer Wet Jet. To buy this mop, it costs $24.99 at Drugstore.com

It comes with

1 Power Mop
2 Disposable Cleaning Pads
1 Bottle of Multi-Purpose Cleaning Solution (16.9 fl oz) Note: This is a smaller amount than the refill size.
1 Scrubbing Strip

The two AA batteries required are not included.

When you run out of cleaning pads, which will be pretty quick if you have a floor of any size, you will have to replace them. A box of 24 cleaning pads costs $12.79 from, again, drugstore.com

They claim that the cleaning pads cleans 2 large rooms or 323 sq ft. After using one, I would have to ask, how do they come up with this figure? The rooms I cleaned were not that dirty, and yet, to really get them clean, I used almost a whole box of cleaning pads. (It was a large living room and moderate sized kitchen...)

The other refill you have to purchase for this mop is the cleaning solution. It is $6.49 for 33.8 fl oz at drugstore.com

So, total cost for this mop system is

$24.99 for starter kit
$12.79 for cleaning pad refills, which go in a hurry
$6.49 for cleaning solution
$44.27

Now, just say you had to buy a box of pads, oh, every month or so. Just say you ended up buying 10 boxes over the course of the year.

10 X $12.79 = $127.90

And just say you only had to buy 10 cleaning solution refills in the year.

10 X $6.49 = $64.90

So, not including the AA batteries that you will have to furnish and replace, or the scrubbing pad if it needs replaced, your total cost for the year for the awesome Swiffer Wet Jet will be only

$44.27 Start up
$127.90 Cleaning Pads
$64.90 Cleaning Solution
$237.07 Total Cost for the year.

The next year your cost would go down since you wouldn't have to buy the mop again. So in the second year you owned your Wet Jet, you would only pay $192.80 to keep your floors clean.

Added together, the cost of operating the Swiffer Wet Jet for a mere 2 years would be an astronomical $429.87.

That, my friends, is some expensive mop water.

So, back to my birthday present.

After looking at several options, I asked David for a Sh-Mop for my birthday.

In your second year of ownership, you might choose to replace some wipes, and may need to replace the scrubber pad. Your cost could be:

It is the final few hours before 2009 is history forever. I am sitting here with my family, typing these few words into cyberspace while David dances Sarah and Travis to the music of "Coal Miner's Daughter."

I am thinking about all that I have done and seen the past year this evening, (okay, not everything), and am just amazed at what the Lord has done in me and my family this past year. There are so many things we have come through this year. Hard times. Yet good times. Growing times. Lots of growing times..... =)

I have an expectancy about the coming year. As 2009 slips into the past, I am looking forward to new things that I can't see yet. I hope that as 2010 closes, I will see even more growth.

A few things I am looking forward to growing in....

A softer heart, a heart more determined to follow and obey the voice of my Shepherd.
A closer relationship with my family. That day by day we would be knit closer and closer to each other as we are with Christ.
A house more in order, time more managed and redeemed.

Goodbye, 2009.

Thank you, Lord, for all that you brought us through in 2009. For Your provision and care of us. Thank you for the things you have begun in me. Thank you that you love me enough to work in me, even when it is hard for me. Thank you that we can trust You for all the unknowns in 2010. Amen.

I haven't blogged about my new exercise program.

I bounce.

And twist.

I have loads of fun.

I am really enjoying my new Needak rebounder.

Actually, our whole family is enjoying it. We are able to get aerobic exercise every day, no matter what the weather, and it doesn't take a lot of time to accomplish. I am sure that we have used our rebounder more in the last 3 months than most people use any of their other expensive exercise equipment in a year.

Why is it easy to do?

We just bounce! =)

Check out Needak, but be careful. Needak is the ONLY USA made rebounder. Cheap rebounders can be dangerous in many ways. From falling apart and injuring the bouncer to causing permanent nerve damage, the cheaper models are just not worth it.

House Labors....

Well, I have had a productive week. Last week, I got quite a list of projects accomplished. Still have more to do, but I am pleased with my progress.

I got our library set up, meaning I organized our books and labeled shelves. This was really fun.
I am looking forward to this coming week when I plan to do some focused training with my kids. Lots of new things have been set up and I want to give each one individualized training. I plan to take each kid by themselves for a day through the training course, =) and carefully communicate and train exactly what is needed and expected.

I am really looking forward to starting this year's school. I have had fun getting things found and bought for the year ahead. Still have a few little things here and there to pick up, but for the most part, I am ready. And since I have bought everything used, I have gotten a lot more mileage out of my money. =)

Yesterday went well!

Jakin's room is now a different place to be in. Very nice....

My desk is empty. 3 boxes sit quietly in the bedroom waiting to be taken care of.

The laundry is almost done. I do have to brag on my kids. They found out that putting away laundry was on my list, and they charged in without being told and did their parts. =)

The lemons are still quietly waiting for their turn. I decided not to stay up until 2 am juicing lemons.....

This week I am planning a major cleanup/organizing adventure. All prayers will be appreciated! I have a lot to do, and hope to be fully done by Friday.

I am hoping that Travis will cooperate, which this morning doesn't seem to be happening.....But things change quickly around here! So, I anticipate being able to get a move on soon......

My to-do list today....
Bull-doze Jakin's room. (It has gotten cluttered up with the 'I'll get to that later' stuff.....)
Clear off my desk (Into the box, everybody!)
Juice Lemons (Yes, for lemonade, but I bought a case, meaning 235 lemons, meaning a bushel of lemons. I need to juice and freeze them, or at least part of them.)
Put away the laundry. (That job that never ends, but is so needed and a blessing to the family...)

This morning the goats broke into our garden. They trashed it. As in ate nearly everything and stomped and tore what they couldn't. A lot of what they ate you couldn't have forced them to eat. They just went crazy.

Popcorn. Such wonderful stuff. I thought I would share one of the ways I like to use it.

Popped corn is a great bread substitute. Okay, I didn't think so when I first read it either, but after trying it, even David enjoyed it. Now, he is not ready to sign up for no bread at the table all the time, but for variation or in a pinch, popcorn is pretty tasty!

Here is what I have done:

Pop the corn and in a separate pan, melt a few Tablespoons of butter, add some seasonings, such as oregano, basil, parsley, thyme, cayenne, (just a pinch makes this not just an okay dish but a great one!), minced onion, garlic powder, etc. Toss the butter mixture into the popcorn, add Parmesan cheese if you like, and serve.

The only problem we have had is trying to stop eating it. =)

I have tons of things to get done. Tons. And no time to waste.
So my computer has been having fun with me. Pretending to die....Did die.....Did a whole fresh install.... Fresh install seems to be working....
And in the middle of this, David says to get faster internet. Wow. I didn't realize how much faster things would go. The things I have gotten done since last Tues is amazing. Mind boggling.
Got a lot left on my to do list, but I am closer to the end. Amazing how little things can make a big difference....

So, most everyone knows that we have been doing healthy and natural for the last few years...

We have totally changed the way we eat and in turn, I have changed how I shop for groceries.

The hardest part of all this has been the non-food items. Toothpaste, laundry soap, dishwashing detergent, shampoo, hand lotion, bathroom cleaner, makeup, etc. I know that many of these things have harmful things in them, but what do you do about it? I don't have oodles of dough laying around here...

But now I have finally been able to switch to something green that works, that doesn't cost 3X more to buy. So far, the things I have tried have worked great. And I am actually saving money.

Am I happy? Yes I am!

I like it.

Yesterday I took apart our dishwasher. Yep. I disassembled all of it's inards.

Why?

The thing was throwing food all over the place, in places it hadn't been and shouldn't be. After running 'Dishwasher Magic' in it 3 times and still having the problem, I decided to do some repairs. After cleaning out all the hiding places of undisolved detergent and food, I put all it's guts back in, turned a nasty load of dishes on and held my breath. When I opened the door......everything was sparkling clean!!!!!!!

Can anyone tell I am excited? No more re-washing, post-rinsing for me!

Ah, Spring!!!

I love spring! It is the time of year that the colors outside are just so vibrant and intense. The birds are showing up in a chorus of joyful sounds. Everything just pulls at you to come outside and enjoy the sunshine, the breeze, the sounds.

So, we run out and enjoy it all. For the kids, shoes come off, coats are abandoned and they play for all they are worth. The garden gets attention, the broom gets busy clearing out the house and porch. The fire in the stove is forgotten and, we all hope, not needed for a while. All the doors are left wide open and the fresh wind blows through the house.

There are new baby goats to play with, butterflies floating by and the first brave flowers poking their heads out and showing their faces.

Then, the wind turns cold, the sky changes color and we all head back in- with armloads of wood so we won't be so cold. Coats that were abandoned don't look so bad now, in fact, we don't want to do anything outside without one. The smell of smoke from our fire is once again welcome. And will you please shut the door?!

But, spring is coming. It can't be held back for long. And down here, we know that the cold doesn't stick around long anyway. Tonight may be in the 30's or lower and tomorrow we could have a high of 90.

Spring is great, and we'll enjoy it as it pushes it's way in.

I Did It!

Yay for me!

Last Monday, I started a painting project in our bathroom.

Tuesday we were gone.

Wednesday, I completed it. All the way. And got a few other things painted as well.

Now, to some, this may not seem like much of an accomplishment. But for me, this is pretty big.

After about a year and a half of marriage, I painted our kitchen. My husband agreed to this project willingly. Paint the kitchen. No big deal. I was going to handle it so he wouldn’t have to do anything. And it was a tiny kitchen, so there really wasn’t that much to paint. Sure, paint the kitchen, honey. J

2 weeks later………………………………..

I was almost done painting. J

I have since done a few other painting projects, and none have lasted nearly as long. But, after such a tramatic beginning to my painting adventures, I have a lot to live down. (At least in my mind…….)

I don’t have a pic to share yet, but I will get one up soon.

I am still not superwoman, but sometimes,…………yeah, I like that feeling that I have conquered the world. J

At least in my mind.

Well, I am one.

I think I even have a bit up the fever that wrappers are prone to.

It seems to be a bit of a virus. Once exposed, it takes a varying amount of time to manifest, but in many cases, once it does, the resulting disease, wrapperitis, can be severe.

Symptoms of wrapperitis include dreaming of wraps, all conversations turning to wraps, all fabric examined for wrap worthiness. The most certain symptom is the strong desire to build one’s wrap stash, filling it with wraps of all fabric types and as many colors as possible. Those infected believe themselves to be happy wrapping their babies and will usually not hear any arguments against wrapping very well.

There is no known cure for wrapperitis. The only hope is to pacify victims with diversity in wraps. In some cases, sidetracking for a time may be possible, esp with other ethnic baby carriers. However, those truly infected, always return to their wrapping obsession.

This is Nichola's sister, Cilla. Nichola asked me to let everyone know about the new arrival in her family.

Travis Brawner was born Friday, Nov 28th, at 5:14 pm. He weighed 9 lbs, 4 oz, and was 22 inches long.

Nichola had to be transported to the hospital for an emergency C-section because of a prolapsed umbillical cord. Thankfully her midwife was there and knew exactly what to do. They lost the baby's heartbeat momentarily but Carol got everything under control quickly and he was not deprived of oxygen or otherwise affected. Cord prolapse is immediately life-threatening to the baby so she did save little Travis's life with her actions. He is healthy and from the sounds of it, very happy. Nichola is recovering well, but said she is quite a bit of pain, especially when she has to cough. She plans to be released from the hospital tomorrow afternoon and should post the full details of the birth when she is better.

Thank you to everyone who has posted comments! Thank you so much for your prayers. I am feeling better today than I did yesterday, but am not quite over this. I did get my kitchen cleaned and reorganized yesterday. I had really been wanting to do that…

Past The Due Date...

Yesterday was my official due date. There was no sign that this baby is getting ready to do anything. Other than feeling it lower in my pelvis, everything seems pretty calm. I am thankful, on the one hand since David and I have still not shaken this junk. On the other hand, I am ready to get this baby here! =) But I do have quite a to-do list that would be nice to get done first. Not feeling well is making it hard to do that… So, keep us on your prayer lists!
